John Horn's Demo on Getting the Most Out of Your Mini-Lathe

John Horn is a well known Texas turner who has demonstrated at SWAT and it's predecessor (TTT) Symposiums.  At February's meeting, he discussed how to get the most out of your mini-lathe.

John has an easy going style that engages the audience.  Here's a link to his presentation notes (a Word document) on getting the most out of your mini-lathe.

John held the audience's attention throughout his presentation.

After John's presentation, members gathered round for a closer look at John's techniques.  Here's a link to a list of projects
(a Word document) edited by John that can be done on a mini-lathe.

John conducted an afternoon workshop on making peppermills.  Here is his handout on peppermills (a Word document) and a picture of popular peppermill shapes (a jpg file).

Faces in the Crowd

Greg Gonzalez is our resident .End Grain Sealer coordinator, here shown "filling a jug."

Tom Enloe does a great job with GCWA's Library. Members can check out any DVD in the library...as long as they bring it back when they are finished with it (!)

The Library has an extensive collection of DVDs on turning, sanding, finishing, tool selection-- just about anything related to woodturning.

Show and Tell items on the Advanced table received a lot of interest at February's meeting...and for good reason.

Do did the items on the Intermediate table.

Mike Stall took home three ribbons from February's Show and Tell.  All the items were made from Olive wood salvaged from the aftermath of Hurricane Ike that devastated Galveston, TX in September 2008.

Clyde Collier took home two awards, here shown with an art piece that he embellished with metal paint..

Gary Rock took the First Place in the Enhanced Category.  Gary's work is highly creative and you can see more of it here.

Paula Hammond has been a consistent award winner at Show and Tell during the past several months.  Here she explains to Bill Berry, our Master of Ceremonies, how she developed this Norfolk Island Pine piece.

Chris Roth's hats are nothing short of amazing.  GCWA is full of talented turners and Chris is one of the best.
