Demonstration: Turning finials with an eccentric chuck by Thomas Irven

Long time member and past GCWA president Thomas Irven demonstrated the art of turning finials using an eccentric chuck for June's demonstration.

June's meeting was held at the City of  Houston's Bayland Community Center.  The facility is one of many venues used by GCWA for its monthly meetings. The club extends its thanks to the City for permitting the club to use the complex.

Tom is a skilled craftsman and did an excellent job of explaining the steps required, the tools used and the techniques  involved to create his unique finials.

Considering the Houston Summer heat (near 100 degrees) there was a good turn out for June's meeting.

Tom's rapid execution belies the difficulty of the process.

The finished demonstration piece.

A closer view.

A completed finial on one of Tom's small boxes.

..An upside down use of finials on a hollow form.

Another well executed example of a finial on a box.

Faces in the Crowd

June marks the official change over of elected officers.  Here new club president, Steve LeGrue, addresses June's meeting participants. You can learn more about our club's new officers here.

Despite the heat, our members have been busy in their shops and on their lathes.  June's meeting yielded an excellent and diverse crop of turned items for the judges to consider..

One of the highlights of our monthly meetings is the opportunity to view others work and discuss them with fellow club members.

Gulf Coast Woodturners' member are highly creative and every meeting is a "feast for the eyes" at the judging tables.

All in all---another great meeting!
